I, Kamayla, am an intern under Jessica Satterfield (DPT) at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in Forsyth.Throughout my research, I learned the designing process and implications of a personalized plan of care. A plan of care is a treatment tailored to one's patient. I identified five components into an effective plan of care: staying up-to-date on research conducted by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), considering other implications extended but not limited to yoga and other modalities, reassessing goals, factoring parental opinion, and treating patients with care. Of these components, treating patients with care is the most imperative, because if therapists establish a friendly relationship and make a patient's treatment session enjoyable, they are one step closer to becoming a happy and healed patient. In intensely researching on the topic and how it affects patients, I realized it can apply to my medical needs. For instance when I go to the doctor, I ask numerous questions on how their plan of care benefits me. I assess how they are treating me, and if they view me as another name on their patient list, I know they do not care as much, compared to a doctor who wants to deeply understand myself and circumstances. From this, I have found greater experiences with my doctors and an effective plan of care. Like myself, you too can assess your doctor and identify ways they can tailor a plan of care more towards your personal needs. Ask questions on how they stay-up-to-date on research, consider other treatment plans, identifying goals or qualities of healing, (for your child) putting your opinion as a priority, and reviewing their ways of making treatment enjoyable.
